Radiology Team
What is a Radiologist?
Your Catawba Radiology doctor is a physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating disease and injury through the use of medical imaging techniques such as x-rays, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), fusion imaging and ultrasound. Because some of these imaging techniques involve the use of radiation, adequate training in and understanding of radiation safety and protection is important.
Your radiologist has graduated from an accredited medical school, passed a licensing examination and completed a residency of at least four years of unique postgraduate medical education in, among other topics:
-
- Appropriate performance and interpretation of quality radiologic and medical imaging examinations
- Radiation safety/protection
- Radiation effects on the human body
In addition to completing a diagnostic radiology residency, the majority of our radiologists have also completed a fellowship — one to two additional years of specialized training in a particular subspecialty of radiology, such as breast imaging, vascular interventional radiology, musculoskeletal radiology or neuroradiology.
What are NPs and PAs?
Our nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) are tasked with important aspects of your care.
Nurse Practitioners (NPs) – Your NP received a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. They have received a Registered Nurse (RN) license, earned supervised clinical practicum hours, and received a national certification in their specialty field from a nationally-recognized body. NPs must engage in 15-30 hours of continuing education every two years to maintain their license.
Physician Assistants (PAs) – Your PA received a bachelor’s degree and completed a physician’s assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant. PA students must complete 2,000 clinical rotation hours and pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE). To maintain their certification, PAs must take 100 credit hours of continuing education every two years, as well as a recertification exam every 10 years.
